CITI Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) And Registration Instructions

Who must complete the Human Research Protections training?

Individuals required to complete UCI Human Research training in order to engage in human subjects research and be listed on a UCI protocol, must complete the online Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) program.

For UCI individuals, there are two Basic courses: a Biomedical version and a Social & Behavioral version. Investigators and study team members should choose the version most applicable to their research. For non-UCI individuals (faculty, staff, students) there are two choices:

  • Community-Based Researcher course – acceptable only for community members who are unaffiliated with UCI or with another research or academic entity; or
  • Provide evidence of completion of their institution's education requirement.

In addition, UCI Human Research Protections requires completion of a human research training program every five years. There are two CITI Refresher options a Biomedical version and a Social & Behavioral version. Investigators and study team members who completed the Human Research Tutorial five years ago or longer will receive a courtesy memo informing them of this requirement. Investigators and study team members can also determine if they must complete a CITI Refresher course by logging into the Tutorial Verification Screen, entering their name and looking at the completion date of the HR tutorial.

Individuals will receive a courtesy reminder notice six months before the expiration of their human research protections training. If the individual has not completed the training within one month prior to expiration, a second courtesy memo will be sent. Failure to complete the required CITI training course will delay approval of IRB submissions and could jeopardize an individual's ability to engage in human subjects research.

How do I register?

You also have the option of enrolling in the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course. This course is optional and does not replace either a Basic or Refresher course. This course is offered as some sponsors ask investigators to complete a GCP course.

If specifically required by the IRB, an HRP Compliance Course for both biomedical and social-behavioral investigators is also available.  This course if optional and does not replace either a Basic or Refresher course.

How many modules are required?

You will be required to take 4 - 6 basic modules depending on the Basic course you choose. If you wish, you can take additional optional modules. The Refresher courses require approximately 4 - 8 modules. A passing score of 80% or higher is required for each quiz.   The minimum "passing" score is an 80% for a module within a course, for a course as a whole, and for individual modules taken outside of a course.  When your Grade Book gives you an option to print a "Completion Report," it means you passed the course. A running tally is compiled in the Grade Book. If you want to improve a score on a quiz, you may repeat the module and the quiz.  You can print or download a Course Completion Report as evidence of completion. You can view or print your completion reports any time by logging into CITI.

How long does the course take? Can I stop and start again later?

Most users complete all of their required modules in two hours. You can stop and begin anytime. We recommend that you complete the course over a few sessions. Save your work before you exit, and remember your user name and password.

What if I fail to complete a Refresher Course by my expiration date?

If you fail to complete the required CITI HRP Refresher course you will receive an expiration notice. Failure to complete the required CITI training course will delay approval of IRB submissions and could jeopardize an individual's ability to engage in human subjects research.

What should I do if I forget my login information?

If you forget your user name or password, follow the "Forgot login information" instructions on the CITI website. The UCI staff does not have access to your password.

How do I obtain a certificate of completion?

After you finish the required modules, you will be issued a completion report that is available to print from your learner menu. Please print the report and keep a copy for your records. Please also give a copy to any members of your administrative team who need it for their records. For help printing the report, please visit the CITI site.

HRP staff will be able to confirm that you have taken the training by looking online, but HRP staff will not be able to print your certificate for you. We receive a nightly updates from CITI; therefore it may take up to 24 hours for CITI completion to be reflected on our website.

How often is the Human Research Protections Training Required?

Investigators and study team members are required to complete a refresher course every five years. Individuals will receive a courtesy reminder notice 90 days before their training requirement expires.

What if I am transferring from another institution at which I completed CITI training?

This training may be valid at UCI, depending on a number of factors such as how long ago the module was completed and the specific modules completed. Please see the CITI Support Center for more information.

Your prior courses may be eligible for transfer, log on to the CITI site and add UCI as an affiliate institution. CITI will review the modules you previously completed and the date(s) on which you took them. CITI will ask you to complete any modules required by UCI that were not required by your previous institution and/or modules that are no longer eligible to be transferred. You should also ensure that your profile for UCI includes your UCI email address as HPS links to CITI through an individual's UCInetID or his/her UCI email address.

Do collaborators at other sites need to complete UCI's training?

For collaborators at other sites, UCI would accept the training requirements of their own IRB's educational requirements. UC collaborators under the UC Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) must complete their campus' Human Research Training requirement.

Why has UCI subscribed to this online training?

UCI is now part of the (CITI), along with over 600 other organizations throughout the world. About 80% of the AAHRPP-accredited institutions use this training. The majority of the institutions which are part of the Institutes of Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), which UCI is a part of, also subscribe to this training.

CITI training was chosen by UCI because the content is extensively reviewed and critiqued and updated and participant satisfaction is high. In addition, the training is both more targeted and more complete. Additionally, if an investigator has taken CITI training elsewhere, this training will be accepted at UCI, with only the small additional requirement that the investigator take the UCI core module of the training.

Investigators may take additional modules, at their leisure, to fit their interests, but any additional modules would be optional. The IRB could require that an investigator complete additional modules.

Who can I contact if I have questions?

Contact any of the HRP Staff if you have questions. The CITI Support Center also provides resources, hints, tips and answers to frequently asked questions about the CITI Program.
